Dr. Susan Shaheen at the California Partners for Advanced Transit and Highways (PATH) at UC Berkeley provides these corrected totals for carsharing in North America. As of December 2004:
· 15 U.S. carsharing programs claimed 61,651 members sharing 939 vehicles, and
· 11 carsharing organizations in Canada claimed 10,759 members sharing 528 vehicles.
That's a 65:1 member:vehicle ratio in the US and a 20:1 ratio for Canada. What are we doing differently south of the border?
And with 1,467 carsharing vehicles in North America, surely we must be getting big enough to attract a little competitiveness with insurance companies!?
